confidentiality

Central to my work is holding space for people. This means listening with confidentiality and non-judgement: i’s important that anything you share stays with me. This is also the case if we know each other in any other context, or share acquaintances: whatever is shared in that context remains in that context, unless you bring it up or indicate otherwise.

There are certain legal exceptions to this. If you disclose that you are at genuine risk of causing serious harm to yourself or others, I may have a legal responsibility to disclose this to the relevant authorities. I would also be obligated to report any disclosures of serious criminality.

I may keep notes from our session, mainly from my readings of your chart before our consultation meeting. I may keep some other notes from our session for future reference. I store these securely and will not share them or use them for any other purpose without permission. I may ask you if I could use information on your chart for research purposes, but would not use your chart as an example even anonymously without explicit consent.

I will offer to record our session for you. If I do this, I record using Zoom, delete the video file and send you the audio file. I then delete the audio file from my folder after one week, unless you agree to let me keep it for my development. It helps me to improve if I can review my work after a period of time, but again I will not do this without explicit consent.

I will regularly undergo a process called supervision, which is similar to the profession of counselling. In supervision, I might disclose anonymous details of my client work, however it is never identifiable and any discussion is focused on my skills and development, never on the client.

The key underlying principle is that I genuinely respect your privacy, which I see as a key condition for effectiveness of my work.
