In addition to professional codes of ethics, reproduced below, I have an over-arching code of personal ethics. I think it should be clear that they are all quite complementary and compatible.
(i) Respecting people’s privacy. As a Scorpio, I intrinsically value privacy as a form of dignity. I believe everyone deserves support from someone who can hold whatever is disclosed in trust.
(ii) Trust. Acting in a trustworthy way means to consider and act in someone’s interests, and knowing you can trust someone means feeling confident they will do so even when you can’t observe this first-hand.
(iii) ‘Healer, first heal thyself.’ This means that anyone intending to aid in the healing of others must first look to work on themselves, or risk subconsciously seeking their own benefit through helping others. While it doesn’t mean not having issues -everyone does- being aware of them enables a person to manage their effect.
(iv) First, do no harm. This is also known as the principle of non-maleficence, borrowed from my studies in Counselling Skills. It means that in considering any action or non-action, the over-riding factor is avoiding causing harm.
(v) Justice. This means upholding the dignity and honouring the rights of all people, whether they belong to the same social groups as I do or not. Practicing inclusiveness and fairness and recognising and addressing where possible the impacts of inequality.
astrology ethical principles
As a Diploma student, I adhere to the MISPA (Mercury Internet School of Psychological Astrology)’s ethical code, and I quote from in what follows.
(a) To respect the dignity and worth of every human being and their right to self-determination. To accept a responsibility to encourage and facilitate the self-development of the client, whilst having due regard for the interests and rights of others, and to act in a manner that upholds that.
(b) To preserve the confidentiality and anonymity of a client and all material relating to a client. To take great care in the publication or presentation of case material and to maintain that anonymity unless the client otherwise agrees. To handle and store sensitive personal information and data in a manner that ensures its safety and privacy for the client.
(c) To ensure that a client is made fully aware of the method of working, the duration and nature of the consultation(s) and the fees involved before any work is undertaken.
(d) To ensure that potential clients, whose needs are beyond the competence of an individual astrologer, are referred to appropriate individuals or agencies.
(e) To refrain from offering any medical, psychological, legal or financial advice to a client on astrological grounds unless the appropriate skills or qualifications have been obtained and enable one to do so in a safe and professional manner.
(f) To refrain from making public comments or predictions on the personal or emotional life of public figures or on the state of their health. Comments on public figures should be concerned solely with the role for which they are known. Any comments like this or public statements should not be made in a manner likely to bring astrology or MISPA into disrepute or cause detrimental effects.
(g) To use non-judgemental and respectful communication and refrain from use of any form of hate speech and harm inducing communication. To be aware of and avoid imposing own values, attitudes, beliefs, and behaviours on the contents of the reading and on the client.
(h) To endeavour to keep themselves abreast of the laws and regulations present in their country and to work within them to the best of their ability.
(i) To maintain the highest standards in all dealings with clients, and to refrain from behaviour likely to bring astrology or MISPA into disrepute.
reiki ethical principles
As a holder of certification from the ICRT, I undertake to uphold their values in my reiki practice.
- Confidentiality: No information about the client will be disclosed to any third party without the written consent of the client or the parent or guardian if the client is under 18.
- Transparency: Include on your website and be willing to explain to prospective clients or students your training background, what takes place in a Reiki session, the subjects covered in your classes, the amount of time spent in sessions and classes and the fee charged.
- Integrity: Be honest in all your activities and communication.
- Support: Have a friendly, positive regard toward your clients and students and openly encourage them to heal and to do the best job possible with their Reiki practice and/or teaching program.
- Respect: Value your clients and students and treat them with respect. Never engage in any illegal or immoral activity with your clients or students. Never touch their genital area or breasts, never ask them to disrobe, and never make sexual comments, jokes or references. Abstain from the use of drugs or alcohol during all professional activities.
- Honor: Honor all Reiki practitioners and teachers regardless of lineage or organizational affiliation. Refrain from making negative statements about other Reiki practitioners or teachers.
- Educate: Inform your clients and students about the value of Reiki sessions and that they do not provide a cure and are not a substitute for care by a licensed health care provider.
- Refer: Acknowledge that Reiki works in conjunction with other forms of medical or psychological care. If a client or student has a medical or psychological condition, suggest, in addition to giving them Reiki treatments, they see a licensed health care provider.
- Non-Interference: Never diagnose medical or psychological conditions or prescribe medications. Never suggest that a client change or end dosages of substances prescribed by other licensed health care providers or suggest the client change prescribed treatment or interfere with the treatment of a licensed health care provider.
- Honesty: Never use another person’s writing, artwork or other materials in your classes, website literature or all Social Media/Video Platforms (i.e. FaceBook, Instragram, YouTube, TikTok and so forth) without permission and giving credit.
- Freedom: Encourage your students to use their own inner guidance in determining who to take classes from including the possibility of studying with more than one teacher.
- Professional Conduct: Always act in such a way so as to create and maintain a professional image for the practice of Reiki and for the ICRT Reiki Membership Association.
- Development: Be involved in the continuing process of healing yourself on all levels so as to fully express the essence of Reiki in all you do. Be in agreement with and working to fully express the Usui Ideals and the ICRT Center Philosophy.
- Gratitude: Be grateful for the gift of Reiki and for each client and student who chooses to come to you.
